Prefix & Suffix lesson: FAIL!

Yesterday was a rough day at work. I did bad at presenting the material and the little boy was far from listening to what I had to say. Not sure what the problem was but I was so frustrated that he was just slumped over on the floor in another world that I wanted to get up and walk out! Good thing today is a new day.

I am beaten but not broken. I will try again. Crossing my fingers for a happier school day which doesn't include me pulling teeth to teach something or bribing them beyond measure to get them to work.

Bummer. Keep your chin up things will get better! And you are right, you shouldn't have to kill yourself or extravagantly bribe the kids to have a good day.

So... homeschooling stuff. My mom is here right now so I asked her for advice.

Sticker charts to build up to prizes for doing work.

Only ask what you really need done/expect and then they know that they really need to do the things you are asking them to do.

You can't let them argue with you and then give in. Or they'll just argue with you every day.

Interviews at the beginning of each week where the kids set goals for things they want to accomplish that week. That way it is their idea.

Have read-aloud time when you're together. Scriptures or a different book.

Invite the 2nd grader to join the lesson with the 5th grader. Teach them something and have the kindergartner draw a picture, the 2nd grader write a few sentences, and the 5th grader write a whole page. Try to do things with them all together if you can't keep them all focused separately. History and science are easy subjects to do together. Obviously they will all need their own levels of math and english, but some other things can be done together.

My mom did something she called Narration. She would read a chapter from the scriptures and we would rewrite it in our own words. We couldn't start writing until she was done reading. The younger one could just draw a picture of the story.

You need to find a homeschool group. Like a co-op. Or a go to the park group. Something so the kids have interaction with people their same ages.

I hope this helps!
